Model 204 V5R1 Installation Refresher

Larry Renton, Senior Technical Consultant
Computer Corporation of America

This course will walk through the step-by-step process of conducting an installation of a new release of Model 204 and the Dictionary. This process will include unloading the tape, providing the correct values for the parms that generate the JCL, generating the JCL and finally executing each job to complete the installation. For the individual that has not performed a Model 204 installation before, this class will clear up the confusion of SVC's, authorizing the loadlib, installing CRAM, when an IPL is necessary and other system programmer mysteries that may trip up a new system manager who is now responsible for installing M204. Installation in all three operating systems (OS, VM and VSE) will be covered.

Programmers' Track

Advanced Model 204 V5R1 Topics for Programmers
Don Cameron, Support Manager,
CCA UK
Two major enhancements were made for programmers that adds new capability to Model 204. The first one is the External Call Facility. This facility allows User Language Procedures to execute external modules such as COBOL, FORTRAN or C programs. The second enhancement is the new functions $POST, $WAIT, $UNPOST, $ECBDGET, $ECBDSET and $ECBTEST. These functions allow the programmer to coordinate the processing of multiple User language procedures as well as coordinate the execution of online and batch jobs. Thread signaling and synchronization are examples of this and will also be discussed in the class. Performance improvements, compatibility issues and XREF support for block comments will also be covered.

Connecting with the Power:  Exploring Connect* and JDBC for Model 204

Because it is one of the fastest and most powerful databases on the market, Model 204 is the perfect server for new generation applications - and the connectivity options keep getting better and better. This workshop explores the various tools available for integrating Model 204 data and applications with other environments to build sophisticated Web-based and client/server systems. Topics to be discussed include:

  • Getting started with each available connectivity tool
  • Supported platforms
  • Comparison and contrasting of the connectivity tools
  • Sample applications
