Insight 204: Spotlight on V6R1
By Marie Kelly
Director of Marketing

More than 100 Model 204 users and experts were on hand this year for the official unveiling of Model 204 V6R1 at Insight 204. Held in the Harborside Hyatt at Boston Harbor from June 5th through 8th, the symposium provided attendees with an in-depth look at the new release of Model 204; a chance to speak directly with Model 204 experts, users, and partners; hands-on training with some of the new features; and a visit to the nation’s oldest and most beloved ballpark!

Introducing Model 204 V6R1
V6R1 was front and center at this year’s symposium. It is packed with new features and enhancements that help Model 204 retain its elite status in the database world.

CCA developer presents the Large Object field type

Presentations at Insight covered all of the most significant updates, including:

Extensive performance enhancements including MP/204 improvements, optimized nucleus subroutine transfer mechanism, optimized TBO and constraints log performance, guaranteed checkpoints, CCAJRNL enhancements, file processing enhancements, and APSY enhancements.

The Large Object field type.

Dynamic APSY support, which extends application availability by providing uninterrupted service for subsystem users while providing in-flight modification to a User Language application.

Perpetual/204, which provides automated file maintenance by allowing you to delay file reorganization and automatically increase files when they become full.

Journal, Checkpoint and Recovery improvements that provide reduced journal size for faster recovery and easier database maintenance, MERGEJ functional enhancements and performance improvements, perpetual journaling to eliminate the need for tape datasets, automated secondary recovery under VSE, and new checkpoint algorithm to provide more consistent service.

Support for TCP/IP Sockets Interface in the nucleus, which provides the ease and flexibility of making Model 204 a Web server or a client simply by writing User Language applications using TCP/IP socket calls.

The addition of user logon password expiration to CCASTAT security, which allows you to manage password expiration automatically, based on user-set parameters.

Insight from Customers and Partners
In addition to hearing from CCA staff about the latest bells and whistles in Model 204, attendees were also treated to real-world application stories from other users, as well as related solutions and wisdom from our partners.
Customers and vendors attentive to V6R1 details

From the user community, Sue Friedman from Memorial Healthcare Systems collaborated with CCA’s Kim Collins to describe the implementation of a data warehouse using CCA Analytics at Memorial Hospital. Jason Miley from Harris County discussed the complete overhaul of Harris County’s Justice Information Management System into a browser-based Java/WAS environment using JDBC for Model 204. Suzanne Burke of Centura Health explained how she has achieved faster file reorganization using regular JCL and CCAIN parameters, effectively improving performance by 50-70%. And Rob Schoenberg of Centrelink shared his early experiences with incorporating the new Large Object data type into Centrelink’s Model 204 databases and applications. Each of these presentations demonstrated how Model 204 continues to be a powerful, cost-effective solution for addressing new problems and challenges.

A vendor shares compatibility

On the partner front, IBM stopped by to enlighten us about the new features of z/OS, as well as their strategy as it relates to Java, JVM and WebSphere. Sirius Software provided an update of their own recent developments, as well as how they are leveraging the new Large Object data type in their product set. DCI, our Japanese distributor, presented a decision support system (DSS) interface for Model 204. And Nodus, Inc. discussed the benefits and procedures for converting KEY fields to Ordered attributes.

CCA is grateful to each of these customers and partners who volunteered their time and shared their knowledge – all of which contributed significantly to the overall success of the conference.

Fenway Finale!
CCA in lights at Fenway Park
It is said that into each conference, a little fun must fall, and Insight 204 is surely no exception. If you missed this year’s Insight, you also missed a fun night at Fenway Park, home of the world-champion Boston Red Sox! The Boys of Summer were in St. Louis that night, so we took the opportunity to tour the park, eat peanuts and Cracker Jacks, and have a good old-fashioned ballpark barbeque on the new right-field roof deck.

The CCA logo has never looked better – fully illuminated against the blue summer sky, and proudly embroidered on the back of official MLB Boston Red Sox baseball hats! Indeed, a good time was had by all--even that Yankee fan.
